[Flexradio] What are your preferred settings with the W2IHY boxes?

In researching the posts on this reflector I have not found this information
readily available so therefore I thought I would ask. I would like to hear
from you concerning your personal experience in setting up the W2IHY 8-Band
EQ and EQPlus boxes for smooth clean audio with your favorite microphone.
I'd appreciate knowing your 8-Band EQ and EQPlus settings in particular and
the type of microphone you prefer using.

I am running the Flex 5000A (no internal EQing or voice processing), the
8-Band EQ box and EQPlus along with a Heil PR-40 mic. Audio is applied to
the BAL input on the back with voice peaks running just under 0 dB on the
MIC scale. I generally run my transmit filter bandwidth set at 50-3400 Hz.

I have a setup doc I wrote for the Flex 5000A with the W2IHY boxes and Heil
PR-40.
I'll send the files direct to you. It also includes screen shots (which were
based upon the older PowerSDR).

I am using a Shure SM58 dynamic mic with balanced (XLR) output. I
custom-made my own cables, one to go to the mic input, and one
terminated in a 1/4" TRS connector to mate with the balanced input on
the "back". (I have my 5K turned around so that the "back" is
forward.) Both inputs work with the mic but I have to turn the gain up
higher when using the balanced input on the back since it has 20dB
less gain.

I don't use any EQ. The Shure SM58 has a broad peak in response in the
upper mid-range that adds "punch" and clarity to vocals. I find it
works well for transmitting too. This is an excellent mic for people
trying to do "HiFi" audio on-the-air.

I ended up just bypassing my W2IHY box and using the PSDR equalizers
(I never experimented with the 100 band version but the 10 band EQ
works really well).

Anyone using the Behringer DEQ 2496? I've had one for a few months after
snagging one on ebay at a great price and the more I tweak and play with it
the more I like it. The noise gating feature is much better than the one in
PSDR. I think I paid around $200 for the box, has a GEQ, PEQ, DEQ,

I had one but I found it a lot more difficult than the W2IHY boxes to set
up.
If you know what you are doing the DEQ2496 can sound very nice. But most
people would not be able to get it set up correctly.
